    12 keywords for one website?

I recently started working with a website where they have 12 different keywords that they wish to rank for. They're on page 1 on Google for 8 of these keywords but they're only top one for 1 of those keywords.

I think this is just too much, 12 keywords!? What do you think?

12 keywords for one page is a bit much... 12 keywords for an entire website is just fine. This is all depending on the size of the site of course.

If I were you I would stop thinking about how many keywords you are targeting for a site and start thinking in terms of keywords per page.

If you have a site with 20,000+ pages then 12 Keywords would be nowhere near enough.

If the site has 2 pages then 12 keywords might be excessive.

I always try to target 2-3 main terms per page plus optimizing for the long tail.

I have to admit that your question worries me as it would appear that you are an SEO? if you are you really should know this.

    really depends on the keywords

    how similar are the keywords?
are you counting the plural of a keyword as a separate keyword?
    widget > widgets
    child > children

    if it's
    blue widgets
    green widgets

then it's fine for an entire site

i wouldn't put more than 3 phrases per page
The phrases should be VERY SIMILAR otherwise just makeup a new page

I agree with banker, if you are going to be targeting more than 3 phrases then it might be best to create new pages just for those keywords. However, if these terms are fairly low in competition then you might be able to get away with it provided you have enough content to cover all of the phrases.
