No penalties for dupe content
Just stumbled across an article that deals with dupe content and canonical URL's. It contains an interview with Greg Grothaus who works with the Search Quality Team at Google.
I am not savvy enough to test it out myself but thought it was interesting to see that there is no penalty for duplicate content being issued by Google. This topic has been discussed at nauseum around here and I'm interested to see what others think about it. A couple of other good points were also discussed. Here is the link: http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/2...t-myth#comments

Watched it this morning, and it's really a standard Google-ish public statement......
"Google will not penalize you for duplicate content. Google may, however, penalize you for spamming"
If you duplicate content because you cannot create your own, doesn't that make you a spammer?
And isn't it the duplicate content that alerts them as to such?
But the video is a decent one, and could be used to explain the whole duplicate content ideal. It is basically just another way to say the same old story.

I watched a brief portion of the video but plan to watch it more in detail. I don't usually bring these types of articles to the forefront for exactly what you mentioned... public statement.
I guess it turns into an interpretation thing but we are always so concerned about duplicate content and penalties being dished out by Google. I have never seen it said around here (doesn't mean it wasn't said) that G doesn't dish out penalties and its actually the first time I've seen it in writing.

I like that it clarifies to most people what we already know, that duplicate content i.e. having the same footer disclaimer, or page template, or having articles displayed through categories/tags/archives does not mean that your site will get a penalty, and that these examples do not fall under the intended usage of the term duplicated content

Considering the amount of questions we receive about it here you would think that they made a video stating taht these things could get you in trouble.
For me I already knew, but for others I think that this video provides good information

If someone can't read,,, they shouldn't be writing anyway

The only reason I posted it was b/c so many questions are asked regarding dupe content. I was hoping to document a source that could clear it up for people who are in the dark.

Nice link. I think this makes things clear for everybody. Google not only doesn't punish you for duplicate content, but actually indexes it as well. Submitting one article to a thousand directorys will not get every page and link indexed though, not because they're duplicate, but because they're obvious spam.
Interesting. I understand what you are saying but didnt realize that webpronews lacked that much credibility. While it never hurts to hear it from the horses mouth, I figured that the same video was attached to the webpronews article so the source would have been seen anyway.
I missed the article from Google feeds in my feed reader but saw this one.
While we are on the topic of credibility, who/what is considered a credible resource lately? Obviously anything from Google themselves but any other solid 3rd party resources?
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on a source that may not be so credible....
