this thread is really great!
I am looking for some google updates and I saw this thread very informative! Can I just ask something about the latest update of google cause i've been trying to search in the SE about it and can't find any info!
I just knew that there are lots of SEO or I may say people doing promotions of site like SEO ways, I believe they also have different ways to do it! they are also called in different names. I just forgot how they are called!
BTW! Nice thread!

SEM (Search Engine Marketing) encompasses SEO - its just another branch and SMO (Social Media Optimising) is in my book an extension of SEO. They all consider link building as part of the process and this inturn affects your Google PageRank.
I think this is what he means although not 100% sure.

found this
Social media optimization (SMO) is a set of methods for generating publicity through social media, online communities and community websites. Methods of SMO include adding RSS feeds, adding a "Digg This" button, and incorporating third party community functionalities like Flickr photo slides and galleries or YouTube videos. Social media optimization is a form of search engine marketing.

this thread made me laugh out loud...
this poor guy is incomprehensible and everyone keeps trying to help, but has no idea whats going on...
I THINK...he wants to know what SEMs and any other S acronym does, and how he can incorporate those strategies into his SEO.
Most of these fields are lap-overs of the same basic concepts. Many outsiders view SEO as purely on-site optimization from what I have gathered through client feedback. SEMs (search engine marketers) are seen more as off-site optimization experts, i.e. link building ...SEMs could also be individuals that handle PPC campaigns, since that is literally marketing on a search engine.
I had not heard of SMO yet, but that seems to simply be a term used for link building that happened through social networks.
Of course I am probably wrong as well, and this poor schlep will just keep repeating himself for the next 50 posts
