Google's new OS to take on Microsoft
Google Inc. is working on a new operating system for inexpensive computers in a daring attempt to wrest away Microsoft Corp.'s long-running control over people's computing experience.
The new operating system, announced late Tuesday night on Google's Web site, will be based on the company's nine-month-old Web browser, Chrome. Google intends to rely on help from the community of open-source programmers to develop the Chrome operating system, which is expected to begin running computers in the second half of 2010.
The Mountain View, Calif.-based company disclosed its plans for the operating system shortly after an online technology news service, Ars Technica, and The New York Times telegraphed the news on their Web sites.
Google is designing the operating system primarily for "netbooks," a lower-cost, less powerful breed of laptop computers that is becoming increasingly popular among budget-conscious consumers primarily interested in surfing the Web.
The operating system represents Google's boldest challenge yet to its biggest nemesis _ Microsoft.

Clever way for them to break into the OS market - if you look at the Chrome browser, it is very good at what it does but limited in what you can do with it. I use it for my low grade laptop to save on processor power.
If the Chrome OS is in a similar vein then it will be great for the lower end laptops (especially when Vista is so poor on laptops)

I have heard that story too! Maybe for now they will only concentrate for open source till they finish the product but knowing google, sooner or later they will develop their own applications.

Until they have an easy way to make Microsoft Office files portable between their system and Windows, they are going to have a hard time breaking into the market share. OpenOffice has been around for a long time on Fedora, etc... maybe the Google brand will get people to switch, we'll see!

I don't think that MS is king of OS. Open Source Communities produced more powerful and robust OS than Microsoft. Microsoft is just milking his old cow no new things.

I'm looking forward to running the Google OS on one of my systems. Google has an excellent brand, and deserve the bounties that will come with their innovations.

i dont think it can harm Microsofts market and business, coz 1. it will be an online OS, 2. it will take one more year for google to launch it. where as MS has already launched Bing, and it is picking up nicely, and most of the users who dont hav online connecticity would still prefer windows

Whats google's new OS got to do with Bing? Bing is a search engine and chrome OS is an operating system, so why would you compare the two?
Also chrome OS is not an online OS, you install it on your pc the same as you would any other. Its just being built with the web surfer in mind to offer better online options and faster web surfing.
