An Independent Google Directory?
Just wondering - do you guys think Google will break off from DMOZ anytime soon and launch their own directory like Yahoo?
Seems like it could make a lot of money for them... |

I think it'd be in their best interests, DMOZ is unreliable at best and makes for a difficult entrance. I'd welcome a Google maintained actively updated directory.

I can see it coming any time in the next couple of years. Quality of DMOZ has been dropping like a rock for the past few years and G understands it perfectly.

I'm surprised they haven't done so already to be honest. In my experience, the percentage of categories at DMOZ with editors that aren't corrupted by their own commercial interests is very small, and many great sites are getting left out (with really bad ones included on occasions).
And is Yahoo can charge $299 (I think that's right) a year - then I'm sure there are many thousands of webmasters that would pay similar prices for inclusion in the Google Directory. |

i's unlikely that will happen. Google's strength is algorithm and automation. Directory needs lot of manual work, not Google's style.

They would have to take on alot more resources to create a human edited directory. Personaly I think dmoz should take on more editors and maybe run a few ads to make it reliable. It would be a shame to let it die.

http://www.markcarey.com/googleguy-says/archives/googles-secret-lab.html well it seem that google use alrerady humans. So i dont see why it can hire more his directory, maybe they are developing a automate form for his directory and that is taking some time for them. remember that google is the best and somethimes good things needs alot of time to be completed. |

I cant wait for the day that Google FINALLY departs from the ****ty ODP/DMOZ, DMOZ is so unreliable its not even funny
Google would make loads if they made their own directory and charged - just like yahoo, but i hope they charge alot less!!!!!! |

Google does have their hands occupied at the moment with a whole slue of projects, I don't think they'll make this jump (unfortunatly) for some time now if at all.

I think the new Google directory should not be human edited. Why not use its algo to compile the new directory?
