New tax requirement...

there seem to be a few non-us people using the adsense program to generate revenue.

Are you signing up with the US tax department?

I'm hoping to move a website to a US based server next year. I'm now thinking twice about that and may look to Canada or the UK or ...

A friend put up a new site with an Australian host he hadn't used before. When things started going wrong it became apparant that the site was hosted from the US on a reseller agreement. That would mean he needs to have a US tax number to display the adwords - even though he thought he had an Australian site.

Has anyone else been thinking about these issues - and what conclusions have you come to?

You don't need US tax number nor pay anything to the IRS.

One of the most confusing paragraphs on the Adsense's TOS is these wich talks about "set up a server in the US". If you have leased a dedicated server in the US, like me, those who really are setting up servers are the hosting companies, not you. So, if you are not US resident nor have any office nor sales representative, you don't should care about US taxes but New Zealand taxes.

Mauricio's right - you only need to worry about taxes in your own country. But if you still have doubts, talk to a local accountant, not to fellow webmasters
