Is it OK to use Adwords on a new site
OK - hope this isn't a dumb question - but for a brand spanking new site, is there any negative effects from an SEO perspective on starting an adwords campaign right away? Or does it make sense to wait a period of time until the search engines have indexed the site.
I've heard from a source (not sure how reliable) that it's a good idea to have a new site out there for a few months before it's monetized (i.e., before adwords or some sort of income generation feature is installed)
This is a small site - google hasn't indexed it yet.

There is no reason not to start using Adwords right away. We use Adwords immediately on new sites to get information on how they convert and what sells - also to make money.

It is the most intelligent approach for a commercial site. In using Adwords you possibly will realize sales well before you can rank in the SERPs and achieve sales. You may find that even if doing well in the SERPs that it makes financial and branding sense to continue using Adwords. We use Adwords even though we place high on the first page within the SERPs for highly competitive keywords.

I read a really interesting report (can't for the life of me remember where) that claimed to have tested the effect of ranking #1 in the organic and #1 in paid and it claimed a huge increase in CTR for both with the double listing.

I just re-read this, and it seems you meant adSENSE, not adWORDS. There is a big difference between the two.
If your goal is to make money through selling advertising, then it is fine to use adsense to start with. But regardless of whether you start using it now or later, you'll need to spend a lot of time developing your content. If making money is your only goal with the site, then it will take more effort on your part to get people to link to the site.
You'll have to become an authority site to see the kind of natural linking that pushes a site to the top ranks.
