conversion tracking - please help!
I want to start tracking conversions, but I want to track them when someone downloads a pdf. On the site there's a pop-up box, where you fill in details, when you press download this accesses a .pl script to process the info, then the pdf appears in a new window - so where should I put the conversion tracking script? (I've got no previous experience with CGI and perl)

You might be able to capture the environment variables from the visitor with a perl script. These should contain the URL of the page that brought the buyer to the button page. You could also ask the buyer some info on a form. There is lots of good info on tracking conversions in Catherine Seda's book "Search Engine Advertising"... it was a little heavy for me but I read and reread and learned a lot. It deals mostly with tracking from PPC ads but the info can be used many ways,.

Question about Conversions
How would you go about tracking conversions both from PPC and Organic search? If my visitors come to my page via PPC then submit a form, I need to know that vs. coming to my page organically and submitting the form. How can that be accomplished? Thanks!

You can place the conversion tracking code on the Thank you page and also set a goal in G analytics for the same page. When a visitor reaches the page through PPC, it will show a conversion in adwords account as well as record as a goal. So out of all the goals you get for that page, deduct the number of conversions and you get the number coming through organic. I am quite amateur at PPC, so I don't know if there's a simpler way to do this.

I have conversion tracking setup on the page, but now after a submission the URL has dynamic text generated by the GA code. I can't enter that code into goal because it's now dynamic and changes. Any suggestions?

PPC and Organic Differentation
I'm using Google Analytics, but need to differentiate between conversions generated as a result of coming to the page via PPC or through Organic search.

Dynamic text generated by Google Analytics??? You must be either having an URL like www.domain.com/thankyou.html or something dynamic like www.domain.com/thankyou.php?ID=order etc If it's the second one, then put the URL till the /thankyou.php? [if the parameter changes every time a conversion happens] |
