AdSence Section Targeting
Was “Section Targeting” always there and I missed it? Or is it something new?
This can help a lot and will eliminate the need for some of the grey hat techniques. http://www.google.com/support/adsense/bin/answer.py?answer=23168&topic=371 raz

This is great info. I had no idea. Take a look at the ads on my site (in my profile) All of the ads are about RSS. Quote:
Why?!?!? No one ever clicks them. I will implement this asap. |

Great idea. If it starts working.
Five days for me, and still no cigar. There must be some kind of additional subtleties required to make this work. I targeted the top paragraphs on a poorly-targetted page, which make it perfectly clear what the page is about. Still, all I get are semi-related ads. How do I get the MOST LOGICAL ads? The ads exist, because I get 4 of them on a DIFFERENT page, which doesn't even mention the keywords! At this point, for me, section targetting is NOT working. I'll be damned if I'm going to spend time implementing it on other pages, until I see it actually work on one page. I contacted Google with specifics, and got the standard "push-button" response. "Our software is designed to work real good, you must be patient, etc., etc., etc. |

Its not an option in the menu. See http://www.google.com/support/adsense/bin/answer.py?answer=23168&topic=371 for info how to implement it in your page. It is a tag you can put on your page to make parts of it more importent for adsense. Incase you get not the right ad´s this could be for you.

Cheers • Where should I place Google ads on my pages? • How can I get my site included in Google's search results? • Enhance your pages with Link units • What colour palettes are the most successful? • Should I put AdSense on all of my pages? • Which ad format should I use? • How can multiple ad units be used effectively? • Monetising search from your pages • Keeping your filter list small • Keep track of changes with channels |

Here is the entire text from AdSence Support: What is section targeting and how do I implement it? Section targeting allows you to suggest sections of your text and HTML content that you'd like us to emphasize or downplay when matching ads to your site's content. By providing us with your suggestions, you can assist us in improving your ad targeting. We recommend that only those familiar with HTML attempt to implement section targeting. To implement section targeting, you'll need to add a set of special HTML comment tags to your code. These tags will mark the beginning and end of whichever section(s) you'd like to emphasize or de-emphasize for ad targeting. The HTML tags to emphasize a page section take the following format: <!-- google_ad_section_start --> <!-- google_ad_section_end --> You can also designate sections you'd like to have ignored by adding a (weight=ignore) to the starting tag: <!-- google_ad_section_start(weight=ignore) --> With these tags added to your HTML code, your final code may look like the following: <html><head><title>Section targeting</title></head> <body> <!-- google_ad_section_start --> This is the text of your web page. Most of your content resides here. <!-- google_ad_section_end --> </body> </html> You can use section targeting to make suggestions about as many sections of a page as you like. However, please be aware that we can't guarantee results, and that it may take up to 2 weeks before our crawlers take into account any changes you've made to your site. Please also note that in order to properly implement this feature, you'll need to include a significant amount of content within the section targeting tags. Including insufficient content may result in less relevant ads or PSAs. raz |

Huh?
Once again, we are left guessing.
What is a "significant amount"? 10% ? 30% ? 10 words ? 100 words ? Since Google won't say, it will be the SEO boys (and girls) who will be defining the word "significant amount" for the populace. I'll guess first - 20% of the body text. Your guess? |

I had just perfected a two stage partial graphics and partial text page design that delivered the exact ads without any TOS violations. It took me around 2 months to get it right, most of the time spent waiting for G to visit and stabilize… So you can only imagine how pi…d I was to come across this new simple method. And like you said, it is going to take experimentation to figure out the number of words and keyword densities. It should be a lot simpler to experiment on a site that that has a lot of popular pages. raz |
