    Google (citizens) United

Another example of Google favoring big business...

They have recently updated their policy on showing the Google Seller Rating stars that show with some PPC Ads.

They now require 150 reviews posted within the last 12 months. Not all reviews are accepted, so its likely to require more.

I remember when Google was testing this. I think there was a story in The SEM Post about it. It strikes me as pretty ridiculous. Obviously, if you're a mom and pop, you're going to have to work significantly harder to get those reviews. And what about businesses that only serve certain areas? What if those areas don't have flocks of tourists running through them? Won't they exhaust the local population eventually? 150 reviews per year just doesn't strike me as sustainable for smaller businesses.

I'm not sure why Google would make a play like this that so obviously puts "main street" at a disadvantage on the web. I mean, money...of course. But beyond that.

I was hoping that they would scale those review numbers based on the size of the business or the area or a variety of factors. But perhaps that is just too difficult for them to do right now.

You basically need about 15 reviews a month for your Seller rating to be seen. One client, that has about 300 of their own clients a month, would typically get ZERO reviews. Because they are proactive about it and ask each client for a review, they end up with about 5 a month. Big Money wins this one...
