AdSense and Facebook Ban Ads on Fake News Sites

Two interesting developments, read the details here.

    1. Google AdSense will "no longer allow fake news sites to monetize their sites with Google AdSense."

    2. Facebook says that "fake news sites [will] not be permitted to use the Facebook Audience Network."

    Good riddance, imo.

But it does bring up two interesting questions:

    1. How will AdSense and Facebook handle satirical news sites? Those are fake news, but they don't seem like the kind of fake news that Google and FB want to target. Will they get an exception? Will there be manual approvals? Will this put new satire sites that pop up in the future into a difficult spot - i.e. "I have to wait for Google and FB to recognize me as satire before I can support my site?" It is a little weird to give the power to determine what's malicious and what's satire over to these big organizations.

    2. Which brings me to the other issue I've seen brought up in online discussions - is this censorship? A lot of people are saying that this is a breach of freedom of speech on the Internet, and that individuals should be given the responsibility to do their research and recognize fake news (instead of corporate overlords.)

    Thoughts?

I would say they are a little bit late on this one :/ But definitely a good move!

Everything will be ok in the end

If it's not ok, it's not the end
