Sales Tax on the Internet

My business is in Miami. I am starting to sell live fish on the Internet and i was
wondering if anyone knows about sales tax on the internet.
I know that Pres. Bush signed a 2 year extention the Internet Tax Freedom Act
on December of 2001.
If I understand correctly, I am only required to collect Sales Tax on orders destined
for customers in Florida which is refered to as "nexux".
Can anyone help me with this question.
Thanks in advance for your reply.

I suggest contacting your state tax department. Their advice will be free and authoritative.

According to my accountant, we only charge sales tax for customers who order from the same state... or actually, where the billing address is.

For example: I'm in NY. A customer places an order with the billing address of NY, even if he/she wants it shipped to another state, he/she still has to pay the sales tax because the sale originated in the same state.

I would double check with your local office though, just to be sure.

I know you don't have to worry about as a merchant. But some states are now require you to list an estimated total of purchases you spend on the Internet so that you can be taxed for sales tax. (you don't have to report the total for sites you paid tax for like shopping online at walmart, amazon, and others are charging no matter where you are located.

You only have to collect sales tax on orders shipped within the state of Florida. The only complicated part is that certain counties have a surcharge which makes the tax higher than the standard 6% -- technically you're supposed to collect the surcharge if you ship to these counties.

Red face

Only sales tax to those in the same state- unless you are in Cali and shipping within Cali- then you can add on another 7-1/2%. UGH. But only in the same state of orgin....
