Just one opinion here and I am sure that others will have different ideas... especially people who have different types of sites.

I believe that if I know the traffic on my site that I can use either my own products, adsense, or links to my own affiliate /retail sites and outperform the small price per impression that these programs will pay.

Links to my own sites can not only make direct sales but those links can drive the sites up in the rankings. So I have two ways of making money from those links.

I will try a lot of things before I give control of the content of my site to some banner ads that I don't control and that could stink up my site.

From what I've heard, most per impression plans don't pay much. I can think of much easier ways to earn money than that.

A lot of people block popups now, and tend to ignore banners, so there just isn't the money in that kind of advertising there used to be, if there ever was.

Only one I've tried is Fastclick.com, and I can't recommend it at all....
You get under $1 pr 1000 banner impression, and the banners didn't fit my site at all..
The Pop-ups pays a bit better, but I never use pop-ups any more, they tend to scare away visitors...
(and many of them are blocked by pop-up killers anyway...)

PPC, like adsense, or other affiliate programs (CJ.com etc..) are MUCH better.

Where on your page are you showing adsense, Ricky? It makes a big difference where they are located. Will not get many clicks at the bottom of a long page and at the left bottom will rarely be noticed.

Banner ads pay better for the top 500 pixels of your page and adsense works better there to - if you are willing to sacrifice a block of your prime space.

I've tried adsense in many different locations on hundreds of high traffic pages and have found that some locations have 6x the CTR as others. Experiment with what your current page design allows and you might be surprised. This will not make up for a low pay per click but it might help.
