I heard galaxy-webhosting.co.uk offers a FREE hosting package.

My host dont do free accounts, sorry, this is because:
1) other hosts normally keep it on the same server as paid accounts
2) people setup free accounts mostly for illegal stuff like hosting mp3s and viruses
3) use extensive stuff like loads of cron jobs and irc chatrooms etc. which strains the server

The above three intend to lead to downtime.

Dan

Free hosts for personal webpages are okay I guess, but as this is in the Ecommerce forum I would not recommend them. Who is going to buy from a site on free hosting?

Yeah, I never quite understood how some people can justify using a free host for a business site.

Not all business sites sell things, leaving the host unimportant for an informational ecommerce site.

Without me running through all of them above sites..
Do you know if any allow free ftp uploading rather than through their online site builders?

If a business site doesn't sell anything, then how can it be called a business?

MaxM : I think he means, if the site is just an informational one, then it's okay to be using a freebie webhost

The good thing about free webhosting is that you can try out a business website without investing too much money.

If it does well and you need a better host (one that you would have to pay to more space, better speeds), you just have to copy the files over to the new hosting and point the domain to the new host.

Otherwise, my experience with free hosting is that it's a little slow, and you really can't complain if it goes down a little more then other hosting... because you're not paying for it.

I guess an Informational site for a business site is what he meant... Guest we should have stated the "retail" instead of business.

A business site doesn't have to sell things. Advertising for example doesn't require items to be sold on their website.

Re:

Personal sites, or jokes or pranks etc is all I can think of when talking about using free hosting. But I think I am paying $4 a month for my personal website too

I dont want unwanted ads on my site just to save that $4 a month.
