How to drive traffic to an ecommerce site

Howdy folks,

For those of you who know via first (or second) hand experience, how do you drive traffic to an ecommerce sites using organic traffic? especially sites that sell many different products.

In the case of minisites, and similar sites, you can do well with article submission, forum posting signatures, and link exchange etc. and these work well enough. However, will such techniques work with an ecommerce site? Otherwise what other methods would you use to drive 'targeted' traffic to your site and rank high enough for some keywords.

Your thoughts on this please.

The same methods apply.

The SEO methods are totally identical for natural traffic. One possible SEM caveat... Greater use of PPC for super competitive and/or overly general keywords.

* minisites, and similar sites - are these duplicate or near-duplicate content?

* article submission - I don't use this, I post all articles on my own site

* forum posting signatures - these are near worthless

*link exchange - these will be dead soon, read Matt Cutts blog

================

what other methods would you use to drive 'targeted' traffic

- read some the basics from the links in SEO_AM's signature

The big traffic secret is... Actually there is no big secret. But don't fret, there are many tiny secrets which we can throw together for ecommerce pleasure. Let's start with a review of all the obvious methods of achieving traffic flow:
  • Search Engines Searches (people search keywords and get your page in the results)
  • Direct Links from Web Sites (including blogs)
  • Advertising Links (including banners, PPC and text-link ads)
  • Non-web links such as newsletters, newsgroups, bookmarks, word-of-mouth, name recognition

Smile

Hit tail dot com is a very useful site which helps you identify your "long tail" search terms. It is free, and there is also a paid version. When you identify the keyword terms your visitors are using to find your site you can write content/articles utilizing those "long tail" keywords, and set up a PPC campaign for those keywords as well. You should also submit your site to relevant directories.
