We use authorize.net. If you qualify with them they are good.

Avoid Paysystems like the plague.

They shutdown, and are holding on to about $250k of people's money (they havent let go of it for 6months).

We moved right before they went 'bankrupt' to LinkPoint / Card Services.

They have been very helpful, and was quick to set up.

Wow. I did not hear about it.
No doubt, WorldPay and Authorize.net is more respectable companies!

I use Authorize.net they are pretty good. Had some minor issues in receiving payment notifications due to them getting server attacks (1-2 months ago) but I think they have fixed the problem now. I haven't had any issues as of late.

can any of these third-party providers be seamlessly integrated into the site without the visitors knowing they are using it?

im thinking about just creating a simple javascript so i can have it do exactly what i want...anyone know an easy way to implement some sort of encryption with formmail or know an encypted cgi email script?

Sure. They all provide you with their own API for working with CC processing

I'm not sure that it is possible to work with such systems via javascript.

if there is some encrypted version of formmail then you can integrate java script into the page for simple some simple math, i just need to find a script that encrypts the text for me.
