Ecommerce web site design essentials

Ecommerce or electronic commerce is easily defined as, operating a business and obtaining new customers, using the internet.

There are four essential components you need to build a successful ecommerce web site.
1. Ecommerce Web Site Design
2. Professional Ecommerce Web Site Hosting

You need more than that to 'be succesful'!

To have a successful e-commerce site you need a bit more.

I'm going to ignore the hosting because everyone knows if you can't get to an online store, or it takes too long to retrieve information, you're not going to buy from it.

So what's most important?

- Targeted Traffic!!! Whether this is word-of-mouth, pay-per-click, organic search engine traffic, print advertising or TV/radio....it doesn't matter. Targeted traffic is the first step. Without this, your e-commerce site will fail!

- Good site design that is clean and easy to use. Too many times sites are too complicated and visitors can't navigate easily. They get frustrated and move onto the next merchant. I do this and I'm sure others do too!!!

- Competitive, or better than competitive pricing for your products/services. If you're not competitive I'm going to quickly find someone who is.

- Good programming.... invisible programming actually. If you don't notice the programming, it's usually doing it's job! Notice how this is the last thing on the list?!?!? - And this is coming from a programmer. I'm not saying that you don't need it. However, a site with great programming, reliable web hosting, an easy to use shopping cart tied into a gateway and merchant account without targeted customers doesn't produce sales!

Only a programmer would say "invisible programming". I think the rest of the world call it User Interface design.

I have recently been advised to choose xhtml over any other programming languages for its added features. Have I been guided in the right path?
