SEO and e-commerce are 2 very different things. I don't think you can do website optimization by using any software or "tricks", especially if they are related in one or another way to ecommerce...

Good summary, rich. I especially like the comment on your referred site regarding making it clear what the advantage is for your customer to buy your product.

affiliate marketing can be your friend with e-commerce. if you go with a reputable company like google and/or share-a-sale you can't really lose money (assuming you do the action as a "sale" and set your price such that you are always coming out on top).
For instance snorgtees pays $5 per sale through share-a-sale. That actually costs them $6 (20% goes to share-a-sale, the rest to the publisher), but a single t-shirt sale's profit margin is around $8-$9, so they come out ahead about $2 or $3 on every sale. So you can basically sink a ton of money into affiliate advertising and if you do it smart you'll always make more back then you spent. Then the trick is just getting a ton of people to sign up for your affiliate program. but places like google and share-a-sale have large enough publisher bases that you'll at least get some right off the bat. |

the biggest problem I've seen on most commerce sites, is that the store owner only puts a line or two for their product & category descriptions. That's a major mistake, as that greatly lessens the amount of content for search engines to find on your website.
Have good lengthy descriptions (at least a paragraph), employ custom page titles that are descriptive and have good keywords, same for meta descriptions (meta descriptions must be unique). any pages in your site that you don't want indexed by google, create "noindex" meta robot tags in the top of those pages (and/or add to robots.txt), to help reduce any reduction of keyword density in your website getting links back in to your website is huge as well |

This shaped up into a nice post. Some other tips in no particular order:
francis, please elaborate on this: Keep them on the right track with the X tips. - To help visitors along and keep them on track and not lost in your site as francis recommended, use breadcrumbs. The anchor text should include keywords as well as all of your links pointing to products. - Create an html sitemap. This helps visitors find what they are looking for. - Be sure to let a potential buyer know where in the checkout process they are. Show them a timeline and let them know how much further they have to go til they complete the process. Also give them options to view the total cost of their sale with shipping or a link to your shipping costs. - Optimize your product images. Be sure to name the files for your images with keywords for that product. Also put the keywords as your alt tags. - Use text links for all of your main pages. Try to avoid using drop down boxes. - Your ultimate goal should be to convert the visitor into a buyer. Be sure not to bury your products deep into your site. Try to make as much as possible no more than 2-3 clicks away from the landing page. Give visitors the option to buy when they hit your product. E-commerce Optimization Tips
There are many options for the small business owner to begin selling their products and services online. But to find that “just right” ecommerce website will take some shopping around. Now, if you are like me, you would want to create your own solution, written in PHP, using custom scripts. But, that is not feasible for many people who just want to begin selling online without custom written PHP code.
So you’ll find yourself taking hours to find a company that offers shopping cart software “out-of-the-box” for you. But don’t worry, as I already found one for you! It’s SEO-friendly software, that you web designers will love because it is so customizable. You can integrate it into your website design with minimal fuss. And of course, security is an issue for all of us, and they offer a Fraud Alert System that helps to prevent credit card fraud. Basically, it’s a win-win for us to use. And for shipping your products to buyers, it comes UPS ready. With real time UPS shipping rate calculations, to the ability for customers to print out UPS shipping labels. ------------------------------- francis Buzz Marketing |
