I've run into a big problem, before I have opened my online store. I sell live tropical fish online. I know, to ship a box that is 8x8x8, it costs approx. $30.00. My problem is that I have fish that are 2" and range from $2 to $30. I also have fish up to 6" that are $50. I can fit approx. 6, 2" fish in the same box that I can fit 1, 6" fish. Hence my problem, how can I tell a shipping calculater that we charge $30 for shipping 6 items from list A, $30 for shipping 1 item from list A and 1 from list B, or 1 item from list C. I am using Yahoo! Sitebuilder and cannot figure out what to do.
Can anyone please help me. |

It might be better if you add a weight to all your fishes. The weight wouldn't be the actual weight of the fish, but the weight can represent how much it should cost.
You'll have to look at the table to see how many lbs it takes to ship to make the postage $30, $60, or whatever. So if it costs $10 to ship 5lbs, and $20 to ship 10lbs, I would assign the lb appropriate to each item. And, I would not make this visible on the browser, you don't want to confuse the customer with the lbs. Hope this makes sense. |

yeah, all of the shipping companies use weight to determine how much something will cost you to ship. You may want to check with UPS or Airborne/DHL to see if there are any restrictions on shipping fish in water like that. They are real sticklers these days on everything.

Depending on the type of cart you use, you could have a box fee that applies to certain fish - or attributes that tell the cart to add x dollars to the shipping cost.
What cart are you using? |

Ex: Shipping weight goal is 5 lbs.
Catagory 1: Small, 5 fish in box 1 lb per fish Catagory 2: Med, 3 fish in box 1.666 lbs. per fish and so on. Thank you all very much for the information. Also, my shopping cart is from a Yahoo! Merchant Account. Thanks for the replies. |

Yes weight is the 1st factor and #2 (maybe not in your case) is the size of the item as well- being long and skinny, or so forth. Check with your local UPS / FedX

I've heard that UPS has implemented a standard $10 shipping fee for ground packages through the UPS Store for most packages under a certain weight can anyone confirm this?
