The best online business you can start is something that you are enthusiastic and interested in. Tons of good money making ideas out there, but if you arent into it you wont get nearly as good of results as you would something you are truly enthusiastic about.

Brain Surgery
I think a hugely profitable online business would be if you could develop an online method of injecting some intelligence into certain people that you meet online. You know who you are...

Well I'll bite: there are a billion ideas and most are worthless since to have a solid "idea" it must solve a problem... the bigger the problem [loosely associated with market demand/need] the greater the return.
So rather than focus on the "idea" - start focusing "the problem" - when you hit the right problem then you start trouble-shooting a solution... if the solution has merit - a miilion+ easy.
The million dollar home page - problem solved people's belief that PageRank was needed... it doesn't actually matter if their belief was inaccurate all that matters - you provided a solution to their problem [getting PageRank]
So what is the "biggest problem you know of"... cancer? Come up with a better or alternative solution - you got a winner.

Mobile sites
I think we're facing a mobile era. Soon there will be mobile focused websites. You should come up with a service that is useful when people are on foot.

THis has been discussed elsewhere. Mobile has been around for 2 years and still hasn't caught on. I agree mobile will hit up meaning pages may be constructed in a certain way, however, consider this.
Nobody really uses mobile now cause it's so expensive.
By the time the technology is affordable for the masses the speeds will be so high that regular web pages will display......Food for thought.

toss up a blogspot site... if you search msn right now for "airline tickets" you will see blogspot blogs have grabbed 50% of first page with professional spam

agree with most here...that PASSION drives your life and if you can channel same into an online biz...you will end up making $$$$
that all said, for us SEO is a real boon! came along via a backdoor for us and we love the clients grin when we post reports and ask "so, how's biz anyways...and for us -- that's passion!

A lot of people start off with a passion or hobby which they will avidly blog about or set up a website and allow others to join up just for the sake of interest.
Others who are successful focus on a solution to someone else's difficulty or problem....and build up a great website, landing page for a product, and email list.
By the time they start monetizing it with adsense, marketing and the like, they already have a good following, a good alexa ranking and PR is probably quite high as well

Here's one:
An idiot screening questionnaire for contact forms. Before a person is allowed to view/submit they are asked several questions to determine whether they are suffering from any form of retardation. The aim of this quiz would be to check whether the person making the enquiry has the right site and company.
My inspiration for this idea is the drawer in my desk filled with enquiries, threats, complaints etc. from individuals, companies and lawyers all written to companies other than my own. We even have people knocking on our door occasionally.
