I am willing to bet that lots of the people who are "blogging for money" are only making peanuts from their blog. Also willing to bet that lots of the people who are "blogging for fun" are quite pleased with their income.
The blog pages on my site have less income than the cost of producing them. However, the blog has more links than any other page of my site except the homepage, it has thousands of subscribers, and many people visit my site to see what we are posting. The blog is an important part of my brand and those links and those visitors empower and produce income from other parts of my site.
I can definitely say that I enjoy blogging, I can say that I am not making a big profit on it directly... but the value that it brings to my site generates an unmeasurable return - although I believe that it is a positive return overall.

I wish I could blog for fun but I'm too concerned with trying to make up money .. and i'm a crappy writer. I need to find some good writers. I can develop the sites but that's about it .. good content is a mystery to me since it's not my strong point.

I blog so that I have interesting new content to tell my newsletter subscribers about whenever I send out a mailing. Once I get them onto my site, I have multiple resources and products they may be interested in purchasing.

Well when I started blogging it was all about learning the www. Posts, SEO, Web stats, Web Designing. And yes I remember having a blog on debt tips built only for link exchange for the site I used to work for.
