Rss or xml
I noticed that xml and rss file types work as feeds, but is one better then the other? Or is it a case of depends?

RSS is XML, but with an already determined format. Then there's Atom -- again using XML.
For simple feeds, for example a list of recent blog entries, then RSS2.0 has everything you need, it's simple to create a feed, and is probably the most widely used format (CNN, BBC, and NYT offer only RSS2.0 feeds). If there's a particular feature you require from other formats then by all means use them instead, but stick to recognised formats, otherwise you'll find it difficult to convince anyone to use your feed.
