On Thursday, a technician at a Bangalore-based service center of one Internet provider said the government had ordered the block of blogspot.com "due to security reasons." Another service provider in Delhi said the government, without explanation, had directed his company to block access to fewer than a dozen sites

If It really implemented then it will be very unfortunate not only for indians but also for all internet using comunity.

It is impossible to know how many Indian blogs are affected. One blogger, Mitesh Vasa, from Vienna, Va., has documented "40,128 Indian bloggers who mention India as their country." That does not include those who do not name which country they are based in, nor others who identify their country of origin, as Peter Griffin does from Mumbai, as "utopia."

This is actually alarming. India is the worlds oldest democracy; including freedom of speech. The Indian parliament and activists should really raise the profile of their governments actions to where the populace becomes aware that to lose one avenue of dissent inhibits all avenues of dissent.

India "accidentally" cuts access to blogs
The Indian government is now saying it simply meant to block a small number of inflammatory blog postings, but that overeager ISPs went too far. ABC News reports this morning that in "scrambling" to comply with an order to block 17 anti-Muslim web sites, "some of India's Internet service providers have simply blocked users from looking at entire domains such as blogspot.com - and the thousands of blogs, or online web journals, hosted there."
