How to properly use Blogs for SEO?
I noticed in garythescubaguy's top12 SEO tips, he mentioned that 25% of your link campaign budget should go to blogs and forums.
How exactly do you utilize blogs to gain links? Do you create your own blog on your own website, or are there blogs out there that anyone can just post on specifically for your market...<----but then that sounds like a forum. I don't know, that's why I'm asking. Thanks |

There are many ways of promoting a site... forums are definitely not the place to get search engine value so what Gary is talking about it gaining a reputation. Visit forums related to your industry, post helpful answers, even go out of your way to provide free lists which take a lot of time to build, become respected in that community, don't push your link just use a sig if allowed.
Using this method you can gain a good number of links from other webmasters in your niche who find your site appealing. You also become watched by the authorities in your niche who may link to good content or news if you provide it. Blogs are similiar, you won't get any search engine value from a blog comment but you could get links from webmasters who see that blog comment and like it, you also become respected by doing this as well. At times you can also write articles for other blog owners and at the end link to your site, if you do this one article at a time it can be beneficial and help in ranking your site higher. Hope that answered your questions... and I had better hit the sack, its been past my 16 hours and I need sleep

Thanks Visio, you always offer some good insightful info. I did join a couple of forums related to my industry. I go and post info to help people out, and I have a link back to my site in the sig. $25/year to be able to place my link in the sig, but well worth it. |

Implementing blog on your site will give you two things: 1. Fresh constantly updated content on your site (if you post regularly, of course 2. You can submit your blog to blog-focused search engines and get more organic traffic and inbound links if your blog get popular. And if you have RSS feed implemented, then even more, you can submit your blog to RSS-related search engines and hubs. Both these things are beneficial to get better ranking on Google and other major SEs. |

As Visio said, a blog is a means to an end, but you really have to embrace the culture, network your content with other bloggers, and not use it as quick fix. Many times writers burn out fast if only doing it for SEO. If you take a big picture approach, everything else will fall into line, including SEO. You really have to enjoy writing, do it often, put a unique perspective on your industry news, offer hard to find info, as well as non-commercial content, express yourself as an authority/expert on your chosen subject. There are many different styles, and combination of styles that work. It may take a bit to find your personal voice. Here are some other tips/seo benefits from a past post. "Blog is Up, Now what?' blog submission - URL probs!
Having read up on the advantages of blog submissions from my site I was up for the job having written many blogs to date on it.
All the sites I have tried to post the blogs to have refused on the basis of an inappropriate of unacceptable URL link Here is a typical ending of my blog address from my site: com_mamblog&Itemid=344&task=show&action=view&id=349&Itemid=344 (site name disguised to conform with forum rules) Yes yes yes I know its a long one but its only two clicks from the home page. Any simple answers not too technical to a frustrated new SEO? |

There are plugins for Word Press that make friendly URLs and slugs. What are you using for your blog? |

I use word press with SEO plugins for a few sites and it works great. Plus the ease of publishing makes it easier for me to get new content out there. Not to mention the fact that my HTML skills are average, so I was using a lot of tables. Word Press gets the content up higher in the code because of the dynamic page creation so the SE's see it more easily.
