Well to promote your new post of the blog, you can do social bookmarking of that particular page to some quality high Pr bookmarking sites, also add your blog feed RSS to some feed burner site so that they can easily cached for the new post.
To protect your site content from been copied, first you have to write the unique content and then pass it through Copyscape and add the banner/logo of it.

If it is kickass content... meaning "one of the best on the web"... then promote it. If it isn't.. don't bother.

That's right, it has to be the Oscar Mayer. You won't get by with that Gwaltney crap.
And if it is great content, you won't be able to stop people from copying it. The best thing to do is to put 2-3 text links in the content itself and hope they forget to remove them.

Is there any harm in using services like ping.fm which allows to aggregate your content around popular social networks, IM statuses (the list goes on..).
After doing blogging for few years now what I understand is its all about creating buzz in the web about the 'next best thing' you have just discovered (topics depend on the theme of blogging) on a REGULAR basis and growing the number of returning visitors.
Lets say Alex once posted a tip in my blog about how to discover ppl who are hiding in the Y! messengers. (nd I thought it was crappy). Very casually I shared this in the Y! chat rooms couple of times. (at that time never heard of Facebook, Twitter).
Believe it or not till now this post is the most popular post and still gets around 50% of the overall traffic (ya I know its not one of the most famous blog in the web).
SEO for your blog? Keep reading, keep experimenting, keep asking here; you will learn slowly.

You can't keep your blog copy-protected even if there is a CC badge or whatever. There are millions of 'copy bloggers' watching you ;) But hey, Big G, Big B is there.

CopyScape is a tool which let’s you track the plagiarism of your content.
And for promotion... by placing a prominent tell-a-friend option on your site, readers that enjoy your content will share with their contacts and have it automatically spread the word – you can try the free widget from SocialTwist. This is the most passive promotion possible, as you're doing nothing other than publishing your post, but also instantly engaging a larger audience.

The best thing to do to promote your newly added content to your website or blog is to bookmark them and to ping them. I always make it a habit to bookmark my latest posts using onlywire.com or socialmarker.com and ping them through pingoat.com

Try bookmarking the unique content to social bookmark sites. If your content is good, then it will picked up by blog related content matching engines like zemanta, surphace, spinn3r, etc. You may also want to join blog networks like MyBloglog, networkedblogs, etc. How to protect from copying is that you put page protected by copyscape do not copy and then when somebody does copy you can send them a legal cease and desist if your content is valuable. You can use use copygator to monitor who has been copying your content.
