Alex - since your post isn't related to Stangs question, you should really have started a new thread rather than "hijack" this one.

I have no experience of blogging (yet) so can't help either of you (sorry Stang)... but I can tell you that PR is dependant solely on incoming links and popularity will (obviously) depend on content & marketing.

Installing WordPress:
You will need: a website with PHP, a MySQL database on the website (you'll need the server name, username, password.)

Get the latest version from wordpress.org, unzip it on your computer, edit one of the config files as per the instructions on the WordPress website, use FTP to transfer the files to your website. You then go to a PHP you've just uploaded in your web browser and click through the rest of the install process.

Using WordPress:

Look through the admin area once WordPress is set up, within Options -> Permalinks there is some bits you can do to make your URLs more search engine friendly (not that they're really needed these days), choose 'Date and name based'. You might need to cut and paste some code it will give you in to a text file called .htaccess, then transfer that up using FTP to the same place your blog is.

When you post in WordPress, it automatically pings a few websites like weblogs.com so you get a few very minor links from it. Google, Yahoo and MSN will all find the blog from these links, so you don't need to submit to them.

Then it's follow the general blog advice: write some half-decent posts, submit the blog to some blog sites, comment on other people's blogs without spamming, write more posts, more commenting, write more posts, etc.

If the WordPress install stuff sounds scary, get a developer to do it. I think my last install took about half an hour, and it was a year since I did the last one.

HTH

Paul
