Try link exchanging with other blogs pertaining to the same topic as yours.

Social bookmarking is good too.

Just write some really nice and useful content and someone is bound to link back to you.

I agree. Well-written, informative and interesting content is the sure-fire way of getting backlinks without the other person asking you to link back to them in exchange.

If you want some short-term traffic burst, write about something popular but make it almost controversial and be sure you get it in before everyone else.

I would say that relevant comments on blogs in the same niche as yours are a great way to get noticed. Also, there is no substitute for good, thoughtful content. If you write about something with passion and insight, people will notice.

A blog with a good reputation doesn't just happen - it takes time and effort. I also use social book marking sites like digg and StumbleUpon to "fan the flames" a bit.

Good Luck.
