I would venture a guess and say it doesn't matter each would have the exact same difficulties when trying to rank a website.

I have always thought though its easier to get pagerank on a already high ranked domain rather than starting a new domain.

Example would be healthplace.blogspot.com vs nonamebrand.com one site is building on a existing domain so its easy to get PR Faster on one that your starting from scratch. I have found that when starting a blog google seems a bit more lienient in adding pr to subdomains. Just a guess though ... I think theoretically it shouldn't matter.

A blog is an HTML web site.

The real difference is how you use your HTML pages: you can use them to publish thoughts or news about a topic (call it a weblog), joining a community of other webmasters that usually enjoy linking to other web sites, or you can use your HTML pages to host a commercial web site, a informational web site, a portal, etc.

In the long run, it really doesn't matter the purpose or the "phylosophy" or the technical features behind your web site, as long as you fill them with something really interesting that people want to visit and webmasters want to link to.

I belive blog get better SERP than normal webpages, may be due to fresh content and frequent up date..etc.. If you are willing to add content more frequently I would say use blog format.

A blog has the disadvantage of variable content - messes up your optimization efforts. So you need to be more powerful than a static content site to gain and hold rankings.

Also, you must be very clever with CSS to reoptimize the blog template so that it has TopNotch SEO.

I've been posting a blog for about a year and I have come to the conclusion that - IF YOU ARE BLOGGING FOR CONTENT - then your time is better spent on a well planned set of web pages.

On the upside blogs give you quick and easy backlinks from the blog directorys and the services that provide them. Also if you are running a news filter blog or other blog related to your content it increase your credibility (if you do a great job) and it is possible that you will gain regular readers thorough bookmarks and feeds.

I don't view a blog as a battle strategy. It is accessory content that will get a bunch of pages out and pull traffic in light competition. A blog is for reputation and community rather than attack.

As an example... if you sign up with Blogger and select one of their templates for page layout... the tags on the page probably have zero planning for SEO in them. They look great but were designed by someone without regard for ranking. I spent the better part of two days learning how the CSS was structured and figuring out hot to make it optimized - plus have the look that I wanted.

Experts could do it a lot faster than me but if you spend zero time on this it will take a lot more resources (links) to raise your pages in the SERPs.
