Question Rank with Quotes, Rank Without - Meaning?

Is there anything to be learned by evaluating your site's rank for a certain keyword/phrase when the search is done with quotes and then again without.

For example on Yahoo! when I search "xxxkeyword" my page is #1, but when I search xxxkeyword my page is not even in the top 100?

I'm seeing the same on Google but not as dramatic - #8 with quotes, #10 without.

Just curious to see if this may be telling me something about adjustments I may need to be making - clearly I would like see the results reversed since most visitors will search without quotes.

    Thanks!

I am of view that we should use keyword phrase without quotes since its the most common way for a visitor to search the web...

anyone got a better idea? :

I'm in complete agreement. Though searching with quotes tends to stroke the ego it doesn't measure anything usefull since the visitors don't do it. However you can use quotes to see if you are even placing and make sure the phrase is actually on your page. You can also tell if someone is stealing your content.
