Quality content wins over back links in MSN Search

My main site has some 2500 back links, and has been doing very well in MSN for a very competitive money term. It also does very well in Google and Yahoo.
I also have a secondary small site (some 12 pages) with some 450 back links, targeting the same keyphrase, which does well in MSN and Yahoo but not in Google.
As of yesterday MSN is showing a small blog of mine targeting the same keyphraseÖ Wow!

Here is the MSN line up for that key phrase:

1st- My Main Site; 2257 BLs
    2nd- Some Site; 9729 BLs
    3rd- My Blog; 12 BLís
4th- My Secondary Site; 463 BLís
    5th- Some Site; 1220 BLís
    6th- Some Site; 2410 BLís
    7th- Some Site; 34 BLís
    8th- Some Site; 1364 BLís
    9th- Some Site; 749 BLís
    10th- Some Site; 99 BLís

These are all pretty relevant sites. By contrast despite the fact that my site is No 1 in Google too, the rest of the sites on the first page have mega back links and yet none of them are on the first page of MSN!

    Conclusion:
MSN pays more attention to content than BLís.
Google Pays attention to content but loves BLís

And Now Time to Show off:
My main site is wearing the Triple Crown; fist in all three engines for the same term!
My three sites are occupying three spots of the top four for the very same term in MSN!

Wow, you are kicking some butts there Raz. Congratulations!

I agree with you on content rich sites having an advantage over backlink rich sites at MSN... or maybe it is just coincidence.

Where I have really good content on new pages they perform very well at MSN but have some climbing to do at Google.

I was gonna give you rep but couldn't because I gave it to you recently.

Google is also trying hard but I guess old habits die hard, even if they are only scriptsÖ

In the last Google update I actually lost my first position, slipping to 3rd with a site that has about 10 times the number of back links as my site in 1st and indented 2nd placeÖ That site has about 152000 pages of which two pages of information are on the actual subject.

However Google cannot decide what to doÖ It keeps putting me back up to 1st for two to three days then brings back the mega site for a day or two only to flip again...

I think deep down Google knows that I really belong there permanently but itís kind of embarrassed to admit it ;)!

BTW EGOL, thanks for trying to give rep.

Yahoo loves content even more. One of my page ranks #1 on Yahoo for a very competitive term (120,000 searches on overture) with 150 links.

    My gut feeling is that

    Content counts

    70-80% in Yahoo,
    60-70% in MSN
    30-40% in Google

It's amasing that Google is the search engine that gives the least importance to content. I guess they should stop advising webmasters to build quality sites and instead tell them to get quality links lol... but weīve known this all along.

Did some searching in yahoo and msn today and see this is getting to be a common practice in yahoo and MSN to gain placement
Google recognized this a year or so and fixed this problem just wanted to share were some of the content is coming from...
I really feel your assessment of content is incorrect as far as how each search engine recognizes it. You just need to do some digging and you will see....
Content is very good but there is an allot placed on links in these guys as well...some of the information you are posting is pure guess and not founded on anything but that...

While I do agree, it is helpful to note that there are exceptions. For example, this site www*audienceresponse.com is number 1 out of 314k and it doesn't have more than maybe 50 words on it.

The company took the same name as the entire industry, and the three words used in the company and industry names happen to be the most important kw phrase. So, in terms of 'exact match' the site should do well. It is also one of the oldest sites in the industry, and has a good number of BLs from .edu's.

But, it has almost no content on the index page. Now maybe, M$N is looking at overall, sitewide content and forgiving content-less index pages. If so, the driver could be that they want to give sites with flash intros an even chance in SERPs.
