New Subdomain not showing in SERP

This is a novice question, but I really need some pointers.

About a month ago added a subdomain to target a specific demographic. It's a totally different site for the same company. This subdomain does not show up in Yahoo or Google SERP at all. Even when I searched "subdomain.domain.com", it did not show up in the SERP. The only results I got were the ads I posted in various classified sites.

Is it just a matter of time? Or do I need to use paid SEM services to boost the subdomain? I don't recall having such problems with our domain.
