    Meta Keyword Tags

Is there truth to reports that there is a penalty to repetition of words in your meta keyword tag?

    example:
    ghillie suit
    bow hunter ghillie suit
    sniper ghillie suit
    chameleon ghillie suit
    ghillie poncho
    ghillie jacket
    ghillie pants

would I get penalized for over-use of the word ghillie???

I am asking because I heard about this and I trimmed down the repetition and as soon as I did my rankings actually dropped by about 33% even though I had gained more incoming links. It seems the "reports" I heard are false...
Has anyone had any experience with this?

    Thank you

    Scott

Google not pay attention to keywords metatag. Please dont repeat keywords for more than 2 times IMO, still yahoo like keyword density, so you can use alternative keywords for the same. example : if you look for web development keyword then you can use website development, web development, website developing, web developing etc.

I think this will help you.

    Don't repeat your meta keywords

Last year with one of my sites I removed word "local" from my meta keywords. It was repeated about the same amount of times you have repeated "ghillie" and I shot up in Google ranking from the 100's to a top 5 position!

It didn't make much of a change in Yahoo though.

I recommend thinking of the meta keywords as "words" not "phrases". You already gave them the word once so repeating could be looked at as spamming.

If you use meta keywords I would recommend using it to boost your keyword density by including words already in your page not by giving alternate words as originally designed.

    That's good advice.

However, I doubt that a mere change of the keywords meta would trigger a huge serps jump.
UNLESS of course the change was good enough to get rid of some penalty.

    Note to the O.P.:
A keywords meta with repeated keywords DOES look a bit spammy. However, that's not enough to penalise your site. So if you're not doing other spammy stuff, you'll probably get away with it.

Fact remains that most search engines are less than impressed by what's in your keywords meta element. IMO it can only really work against you - rather than in your favour.

keywords repetition may not be helpful in getting a boost on search engines especially at present when the era of meta tags search engines is gone.
