Google loves good backlinks. Try and get a few good links from relevant, authority websites and make sure you use your target keywords in the anchor text.

you can also try to set up a blog for your website. Ofcourse you will have to post relevant unique content on this blog from time to time.

Be patient, it might take some time before Google thinks your site is really important. You probably have done this already but you might want to target keywords that are not too competitive so you can put yourself in the first result pages for them and them use those listed pages to link to your other pages for more competitive keywords.

As per my experience i would suggest the following exercies. Do it if you have not done yet.
    - W3c validation of home page.
    - Submit in Google webmaster tool.
    - Improve code to text ratio.
    - Remove unwanted meta tags.
    - Resolve canonical issue
    - Remove external links from hom page.

None will help to get your site rank in Google.

W3C validation is an HTML validation standard, nothing else. Search engines find it easy to navigate through sites that are free from the major coding errors and getting your HTML validated helps to remove coding errors, thus making way for smoother navigation. No help in increasing ranks

Google webmaster tools will help you understand how Google interprets your site, crawling activities, errors, analyse robots.txt, set geographic location etc. NO help in increasing ranks

Unwanted Meta Tags, keep them or remove them, no change in ranks.

Canonical issue - Might help if you have links pointing to www.domain.com/index.html and www.domain.com/ but if not, then no effect on ranks.

Removing external links from home will in no way help to improve the ranks. On the contrary, keeping links on your home page to related authority sites and pages will help improve your page's trust and quality and will also help to establish topical authority.

The main thing that will help to improve ranks in Google is links, the more and better links you have, the higher your ranks are.

thank you for the words of wisdom

the site in question is a foreign exchange site that is very focused on the australian, european and us markets.

therefore would it benefit my site having links to the european central banks and some well k now banks foreign exchange pages?

    thanks in advance

That's always happen on my keywords. Every SE have their own algorithm on how to rank a site. That's why they are different in their result.
