Microformats provide software with specific information about what it is reading.

There are many forms of Microformats.

In SEO the rel="nofollow" is a microformat. Why is it a microformat? Because rel="nofollow" gives specific information about the link software is reading.

The new craze in Google is 'rich snippets'. Where additional information about a website is displayed in search results next to the corresponding website.

These results can be shown in many different ways. Reviews, Google+ profile image, Votes, Items, Prices, etc.

Micro formats are web based communications that explains web data.(If you’re heard of vCard – .vcf files – then you’re already familiar with the concept of microformats, albeit the microformat version is hCard.)

    Thank you for this information.
I tested the rich snippets for my site and came up with this:

    Google search preview
The following errors were found during preview generation:

This page does not contain authorship or rich snippet markup.
    Extracted Author/Publisher for this page
Page does not contain authorship markup. Learn more.
Extracted rich snippet data from the page
