Teoma who?
first post here of many I hope as there is more to life than Google ;-)
But what has happened to Teoma??
I remember not that long ago reading things like...
"The new Google"
"Teoma will compete with Google to be top search engine"
"Real competiton for Google"
It hasn't really materialized has it. I mean I hardly hear about them. They rarely get a mention nowadays in internet or SEM press. What happened to the real competition they were to provide Google?
It seems to me that Googles main competitor is AllTheWeb nowadays.
The hype at Teomas launch does not seem to be justified. I'm not saying they are not worthy of competing with Google, just that something seems to have gone wrong with their marketing or whatever, as they seemed to have died a death.
Am I the only one who thinks they have yet to come close to living up to the hype they got?

I totally agree with you Webby. More recently I have been contemplating what the Google/SE landscape will look like once Microsoft enters the fray. Looks like they are getting serious about competing against Google.

I just think they have a crap marketing and PR department lol.
There are ways to get yourself in the headlines without major cost. After all the hype they just vanished. Shame really, as apparently its good search engine.

teoma in itself is not a bad se...
but it is all about money.
1st, to index as many pages as google u better have a monster hardware cluster and a huge db. (this is very expensive to maintain/build) so the funding has gotta be there. otherwise u have to be selective on how much and what u index (as google is already selective)
2nd, google has grown over the past 5+ years... very much thanks to Yahoo!... ah the branding... that allowed their little logo and name bee seen by millions and millions. google got to feed off of Yahoo!'s marketing. all the while google.com itself was simple vanilla with no flash and bells annoying ads. so that when the average person got curious enough to see what google looked like... it was a breath of fresh air from all the big business banner down your throat advertising.
anyhow teoma does not get anywhere near the visibility google got with Yahoo!
therefore, the only way teoma is gonna get it.... SPEND SPEND SPEND SPEND SPEND SPEND SPEND SPEND SPEND SPEND SPEND
but before they do... they better have one heck of a good reason to quit using google, yahoo, aol and msn!

Teoma had a chance for a minute there, just like Altavista did. Both did nothing about it though. I have/had good ranking on Teoma, but I don't think anyone really uses it any more.

At least Altavita made an effort. Back in the days, here in Holland mind you, everybody used Altavista (that was before G came in). Why? It's a foreign (to us, maybe not to you) SE, but it had - and still has - a localized frontpage (altavista.nl). People tend to like that.
Teoma.nl is CR4P, something of a hobby thing, redirecting to teoma.com. I don't see any benefit in using Teoma, even their toolbar is bland (which reminds me: vote for your favourite toolbar in the poll)

That is the problem when people bring up old threads.
Teoma is owned by AskJeeves. Ask is one of the largest search properties out there. Its currently behind Google, Yahoo, MSN, and AOL I think. I think its #5.
That is not too shabby. Plus Teoma is unique, smart and does not conform.
Teoma is a great engine for those in the education field. Experienced searches use multiple search engines.

That's a bit too "niche" for me I'm afraid. I'm quite egocentric when it comes to SE. If it doesn't list me in a good way, I can't possibly like it.
To me, Teoma is just too narrow. For people who use meta SE a lot (like I do) Teoma could be a nice bonus. Mamma.com for example uses Teoma results, so does kartoo.com (try that one for a clustering SE !!). Then again: one of my favourite metas/clusterers - Vivisimo.com does not.
Teoma may be great, but I soon kicked off their TB ;)
