I would say paid inclusion with any search engine is madness. Ask especially as they only have a tiny proportion of the market. Better to do the more expensive Google Adwords, or if you want PR, Yahoo directory or Business.com
You wouldn't even get PR from search results pages - you need a spiderable directory for that.

Don't waste your money on Yahoo either. Use the free submit. When I had good rankings on ASK I still didn't get much traffic. Best to optimize for G, the rest will follow.

Im going to cast one more vote against ask. I did it for one of my sites before I knew better. I only get 1 or 2 hits a month from ask. Another site of mine, I got in for free and have about 60-80 pages in the top 3. I get 5-10 hits a month.
Problem with ask is that they are a ppc whore. Can they squeeze any more sponsored listings in before the web results?

It can be worth it if the rewards are there. One client's site gets 25-30 a month from Ask, that generates maybe 5-6 sales. That pays for the submission many times over. If you want to get in quickly then pay, otherwise wait—you'll get in evenually.

I used a paid submission of Inktomi some time back on my first site because I wanted to play with the SEO and since I wasn't a reader of SEO chat, I didn't know the importance of inbound links, etc.
They guaranteed a crawl every 48 hours so I was able to really tweak my on site content. It was great as a beginer.
Of course now that I have read SEO chat religously, I have gotten the bots to visit me a lot more often than that and "paid spidering" has become unneccesary.
To me $30 isn't a whole lot to try something that you know at the very least isn't a scam. You will get spidered and your client will show up in Ask. If you're patient though, and keep using the techniques in this forum, you will be spidered anyway for free.
Hope that helped instead of confuse since its a bit convuluted.

ASK.com is a waste, do not use it. But I totally agree derryt... Yahoo was worth it, when it was just a flat rate, but now it is just a complete waste.

Remember that for whatever reason, Ask is very popular in the UK. I get sales from them everyday. In the US though, I think you pretty much get nothing.
