Like I always say... When it comes to Ask... don't ask. Let Ask take care of itself. Spend that time, energy and/or money on Google and get a much higher return.

Ask is up to 9.8% for one of my sites that fits their demographic, and that's not even relevant to the overall percentage of search engine traffic sources. I've noticed a steady stream of referrals throughout the day.
Something's up, either it's some kind of "funny business" going on or their user base is increasing.

I have not seen any numbers supporting a significant increase in Ask's traffic or market share. It could be that you increased position there.
If you don't mind me asking... what kind of general volume are you talking about on a site getting 10% of its traffic from Ask? Is said site visible on those same search terms on Google Yahoo and Bing or is it a #3 in Ask and a #43 in Google?

But yeah, you right, who cares about Ask. Optimize for Google - money is money.
LOL We used to be an ask.com sister company, part of IACI. They absolutely suck as a search engine... When we were spending $3,000,000/month on Adwords w/ Google we had to be forced by the parent company to spend $200,000 a month on PPC at Ask... just to throw 'em a bone.
Their traffic is craptastic... doesn't convert for crap. Most of the people who end up at ask get there as a result of arbetrage... ask buying PPC clicks on other search engines like Google because they hope when they get to ask they will click on an ask PPC add where they can make more than they paid.

Personally I see every bit of traffic important, what would happen if the major 2 or 3 search engines banned your site or something like that, you would not have any traffic.
Also the more reach you can get, the better I feel.

I totally agree with you if... AND ONLY IF... you own a site that is a hobby and you are not reliant upon major traffic and conversions. Most retail/commercial sites would shut down if they had to live with the very minor traffic Ask.com affords. It would not make business sense to continue to focus on the seach engines for conversions over the Internet.
Bottomline: If a commercial/retail website only had traffic from other than the big three search engines (Google, Yahoo, and Bing) e.g., Ask.com, the owner of that site would starve to death or be forced to sell their little children into slavery.

I agree what you say. What I meant was bits of traffic from many different sources is better than having all traffic from just 3 sources. It's like the having all eggs in one basket sort of thing.
In anycase, when I say I would like to have as much traffic as possible, this doesn't include crap traffic, like robots or traffic on sites that are totally untargetted and likely to not convert at all. Afterall that's just a waste of bandwidth.
Overall though as you say, there is no point in focusing attention on ask if it gives hardly anything compared to the major big 3. Personally Ask gives me 0 traffic.
