You will continue to receive basically no traffic from Ask no matter what you do. Why waste your time. Do not optimize only for Ask. Focus on your content and getting relevant backlinks. Do that and you will do fine in almost all search engines; including Ask.

Ask is based on a subject-specific local popularity system, so in order to rank well, you need to have links to your site from the top 30-50 ranking sites for a particular kw phrase. Another important key is to have links from the "hubs" in your community, which can be found using Teoma's search engine and looking at the list of "resources" for a particular kw phrase.

Ask is actually one of the most publicly open entities about how to achieve rankings. They figure that their index can't really be gamed, since they rely on links from on-topic sites and pages only. It's strange to think that if Google used their system, spamming would be ten times harder than it already is. Anyways, Ask reps will actually say, straight out at conferences like SES exactly how you should optimize your site to get higher rankings... The trick is trying to get links from popular sites in your community if you don't have great content worth linking to...

I just checked my server stats and I see that crafty little jeeves poking his nose in there - so it seems that he has heard of (at least one of) my sites.
Never trust the quiet one...
But I don't see anything in the results and I certainly don't get any visits from his friends...
