Im sure i have seen some Serps in Yahoo! display meta information that isnt available from the main body of a webpage, and the odd freak occurance in Google too, where descriptions and titles have been pulled from the only place they appear on my sites - the Meta.

As for actual benefit to you, there is none in the big players, although sometimes by chance your meta may appear on your listings, it wont help/harm/hinder your position in the SERPs.

Well seeing you asked in the Jeeves forum they are very important. Meta to J is like PR to G.
Now if you would have asked in the Google forum I would have gave you a much different answer.

they are unimportant in most things but they are important in that they are one of the boxes to check in basic seo, its so easy to do why bother not doing it?
