That's actually a good question. The key to increasing your CTR (click through rate, the percentage of peolpe who click on your banner) is making sure your advertising is targetted i.e. your banners about MAC hard drives are only shown to people who own or like MAC computers. If you show your banners to people to don't care about what you're selling, then you'll NEVER have an effective advertising campaign.

Also, make sure your banners / text ads are direct and to the point.. don't use silly slogans such as "We're the world's Number 1".. people have become almost immune to this kind of advertising.

Be sure to use a headline that will perform i.e. it get's peoples attention based on the product / servic at hand!!

ctr advertising

Hi Darrin
Thanks for information.
But I think other than this the page where it is being displayed also matters.
Any other factor responsible for increasing CTR in Advertising

To increase your CTR.

There are only 4 factors. Experiment and change one criteria at a time, multiple variables can be difficult to understand.
1) Change the graphic image on the banner, did ctr go up or down?
2) Change the message, did ctr go up or down?
3) Change the fulfilment, i.e. what do you get if you click.
4) As mentioned previously the quality of the audience is the last factor.

This is exactly the same science used by slick direct mail experts to optimising the response rate on direct mail and get the best value for money, before they do the big expensive mailing

They experiment with the 4 factors to smaller trial groups to determine how to optimise the:
1) List
2) Message
3) Image
4) Fulfilment

I have no personal experience in banner advertising, but I'm 98% sure that interactive banners get a higher CTR than normal ones.

You must have seen that little "duck shoot" banner where you have to hit the duck, ie click the banner. Of course killing a duck might not really be suitable for your product or service!

Another popular one seems to be the question and answer banner where the potential customer answers a question from a list of answers using a drop down menu - might be worth trying.

maybe it's different with experienced users, but I know I usually automatically ignore anything flashy/annoying, and only really consider the tasteful ones

I agree. Those banners are strictly old school and probably not that effective any more. I would go the class and elegance route instead.
