getting /404 page in Organic report

    Hi Guys,

I have a question about /404 page shows in Organic report even though I blocked that page using robots.txt.

    1. I want to know how does the page show in Google analytics organic reports? I checked the Google search console /404 is not present
    2. What would be the possible way to fix this? I know using tag manager can track those 404 and other error pages but I want to know why this things happen...
I did a research about this but all it gave me are tracking error pages.

this is the first time I got this issue, any help is appreciated

Are you redirecting to /404 if someone ends up on a page that no longer exists? If so, stop doing that, and return a 404 status code instead.

How does that work? Why do you have a /404 page?

Normally, if someone would go to www .example.com/doesnotexist, tgat page should return a 404.

yes, that's correct! the time I removed the 301 redirect of not existing page to /404 I should see the URL of the real not existing page but still the same story I still see /404 in my GA organic report.
/404 page should not be in organic since I disallowed that.

    this is really weird

Heya Fullhouse ....just jumping back in here...where you able to resolve this?

the time I removed the 301 redirect of not existing page to /404 I should see the URL of the real not existing page but still the same story I still see /404 in my GA organic report.
I notice you did not mention in your comment above that in addition to removing the 301 that you are not returning a 404 server response on the page. In case you're not sure, we have a free tool here for you to run the check: HTTP Header Response Status Codes Check Tool. Also, you should not need to have the page hidden behind robots.txt, if you're returning a not found server response...since the page does not exist

If you wanna PM me the exact URL, I can try to take a closer look if I have time

    Hope this is useful
