    Advice on Google Analytics in-page tracking


    I use the in-page analytics on GA to gauge engagement but noticed a discrepancy. I have multiple widgets on the homepage that utilize tabs. There is also a dynamic carousel that has a previous/next action. All these tabs and actions use a /div tag and hash (#) as their href. Only problem is, GA is treating all these as one page/link so every instance of href="#" is being tracked as the same "link."

    Is there anyway to correct and differentiate each action/link in GA when using # as an href?

    Hey (not provided) hehe....good user name...from what I understand, there is no way to play with settings on that. However, to solve the problem of how people are interacting with those you can tag them as events and that way you can measure the interactions. Also, you can try playing with some of the non-GA click tracking software. I have worked with clicktale, which has a free version but it is more expensive if you sign up and crazyegg...less features but cheaper...

    Analytics pro Yehoshua Coren endorses what whiterabbit wrote. As Yehoshua says, "The correct answer was the one in the response -event tracking is the appropriate model for the carousel." Likewise fellow analytics pro Annie Cushing. I invited Annie to respond over Twitter, and she wrote back, though hadn't noticed the issue was for internal links, and answered initially regarding external links.
