Why care?

I have read trough quite a few of the posts on this forum.
But I can't find the answer to this question:

Why care about alexa ranking? What is it good for? Absolutely nothing?

Perhaps a measure of pride and/or standing versus competing sites?

To be honest I've never cared much about Alexa...

You can ask the same thing about Page Rank, why care, they are both spyware software programs, to gather information on the volume of traffic that websites get. Alexa, at least gives background information on the website and a lot of great related links. I like the Alexa toolbar, and the traffic results it provides, note that it only reflects traffic from ALEXA toolbars users, and not the entire internet traffic scope.

The trade that you make with any toolbar is their right to record every place you go to, have been to and are going today. You can read my other posts on this forum that go into detail about the issue if you want to see more....

You can cheat Alexa, but you cant cheat Google. You can easily get a very good traffic ranking at Alexa, but you can't get a higher PR.
Just use one of those Alexaboosters and in a week you will see the difference. I guess Alexa is used to impress newbies and make them think your site is very popular when it is actually BS.

Alexa, to my mind, is/was an experiment gone wrong. Has no real basis in reality. The founders made some bucks when they sold it, but it has not stood up to its promise. It will fade, I believe, to the point to where we will be asked "what was Alexa?"

buying links is considerd cheating by Google.

But once Google finds out about this they stop the selling site from passing page rank.
You could check out the phpbb website, none of the ads are passing page rank.
