deregular -

Tip of the Day:

Go to your site in Alexa and click on "Correct Errors and Omissions"
Then, Click "Update Thumbnail Image"

It will be updated within 3 days

Otherwise it never updates....I use it every time I change my home page.

Hope that was helpful!

Wit-

I will never use a thumbnail search engine because of the loading time and most times I cant tell if a site is what I am looking for just from a thumbnail. Remember why Google became the market leader over Yahoo. A lot had to do with the quick loading and cleanness of their initial page.

Shame we are all just interested in SEOing our own sites, and are not looking for info on the web. On a "regular internet users" forum, Alexa would get more followers. It's just that we all know about the easy-to-fool Alexa toolbar and thus think A. is rubbish, when in fact it is ok.

Yes, but Alexa as lot of pub... Maybe more like IceRocket... Anyway, I think Girafa thumbnails are better (they are updated daily).

And I think people doesn't read all the messages carefully or at least they are not open minded ;) It would be an option! as I said in a message

The Alexa Toolbar is very usefull, the only NO is that spyware removers think it is spyware, but it does the same as the Google toolbar do: Says at what webpage you are...

I DO think Alexa's toolbar leaves too many traces on uninstall, the spyware removers all agree on that. Also, if you have multiple toolbars including Alexa's they tend to get "mixed up" when you try to hide one...

FYI most thumbnails sources provide a method to update the pic. For example the Thumbshots (used on lots of sites) can be managed at https://www.thumbshots.com/manage/login.pxf

Girafa doesn't even list my site so I can't compare
Their thumbs look good though, very crisp. Very useful to us DSL users

Lets see an example...

http://www.icerocket.com/search?tab=web&q=sprint+total&sb=SEARCH

This is showing 20 results, equals 86KB.

My website (in the top) will not gain that much attention because the colors are all messed up... Now, keep looking and, for sure, a website with a orange car will gain your attention.

Why? I've used that "technic" in others website, people kind of like headers with pictures. I've seen it a lot in Web Design websites. People tend to keep in their memory what they like to see, not what they like to read.

If you go to a school and ask a kid "Who was Napoleon?" he may say "Why the hell should I want to know that? Probably is dead anyway". But if you ask "Hey, who is that hot chick passing by?" he will say is name, where she live, what she normally wear, etc etc.

So, in this case people wouldn't ask "Hey, what is that website that is selling 100MB of hosting for €8,49 a month?". Nobody will answer you, neither I would do... But if you ask like this:
A) - What is the name of that web hosting site with the orange car?
B) - That with the black airplane too?
A) - Yeah, that one
B) - Titanium Solutions, quite don't remember the URL but search in Google...

This kind of examples do happen all the time, when people is talking about the web. Most of them don't remember a name, is like a car... They wouldn't remember its a Koenigsegg, but they do remember it's orange and it looks cool...

So, this is to say, once again, that thumbnails on the search engines are really the way to go...

That for example my website, www.directorypt.com, it has thumbs of the websites and people seems to like them alot (i've received lots of positive feedback on that feature). I even use it on other websites of mine where I have links.

Great example.

Actually, just to make my thumbnails/thumbshots/whatever look prettier, I changed my very bland language selection redirect pages into proper "doorways" with simple and clean graphics to catch your eye, even if the colours are quite muted. Also enlarged the header, to make it (almost) readable on the thumbnail. It stands out now, and (I believe) in a positive way too.

With my traffic (99% of visitors are regulars) it won't do me any good, but it's the principle...

P.S.: Actually, I DO remember the car make Koenigsegg, it was on Top Gear a couple of times... Can't remember the colour though ;)

Sorry for pulling this thread up again... I've tested with 8 persons the Alexa search engine.

What i've told them

- The results are the same as Google
- They can select to see all/3/5/none thumbs
- It's free

7 persons are now using Alexa instead of Google...

I will now try to see what happens if they install the Girafa toolbar (it will not be possible with all of them, 2 use other browsers... non IE)

Comments on this?

LOL - did you also tell them to search for your site and then click on it?

Seriously: if you want to start a buzz, why not do it like that? Seems they are convinced already, and that's not so strange. Lots of people (not all, see posts above) would love to have Google-with-pictures, and for now the closest thing is Alexa.

BTW - tried Girafa, but I tend to have it turned off almost all the time. I uses my favbar's space and I don't want to try and put all my favourites into the Girafabar. Too much hassle for me, but I can turn it on with one button whenever I like

well if alexa has never gotten a screenshot of our site to begin with, how can we get it to get the screenshot?
My site www.scriptdownloads.com is over 4 months old and it still hasn't shown up on alexa's screenshot
