Alexa Rating - What is it worth

What good is an Alexa Rating anyways?

Mine has gone up and down over the last few months, I see no difference if we are at 30k or 70k.
I see from some post that is just a measure of pride... But who would ever care what Alexa would think?
I understand SERPs or even PR as a form of Pride but not an Alexa Rating.

Is Alex / Amazon going to start is own Search Engine, where the rating would make a difference?
Or is rating just eye candy. Does anyone have any insight in this...

Thanks...

I would not put any weight on Alexa ratings, they're useless for the most part.

Just as a for instance, one of my sites which is barely 2 months old, gets 99.8% of all of it's traffic through PPC, is ranked 338,115. Of course up until a week or two ago it also listed this site as having popups. I never have and never would ruin my site with popups.

My main site, which is nearly 5 years old, gets probably 90% of it's traffic through search engines, is ranked 820,448.

Plus Alexa rankings can be easily skewed, which makes them even more worthless. And the editors are idiots. Actually worse than the editors of some other unnamed place.

Overall, Alexa isn't worth much, at least to me.

I only get a few visitors each day, and I have an Alexa rating of 86k and going down every day...

If Alexa is some way of measuring traffic, it sure isn't working on my site.

Yes, that is what I mean. Our Ratings go Up and Down, yet the visits to our site remains the same.

I did notice, by installing the Alexa tool bar to a few different computers, ones with their own IP, I was able to get our rating higher just by visiting my own site. I hit 20 pages of my site with each computer and in a matter of two days my weekly rating went up over 15k!?

I got Alexa rating figured out. Its cool if you have a high one so you can tell people you have a high one. Then it looks like you are such a pro SEO to people who have no clue. It really does not seem to be accurate at all, but I check it every so often when Im bored like im going to do now

Alexa rank is upwardly skewed towards computer/webmaster sites. This is because webmasters are mostly the only ones who actually use the Alexa tolbar. Therefore, sites that attract webmasters, like SEO Chat will have a higher Alexa ranking than another site with comparable traffic, but in a non-techie subject.

Alexa rank is not accurate. Don't worry about this rank.

although i dont rate alexa for much - the results in the top 100,000 are more relevant.

I have never taken a second glance at alexa.
BUT one of my competitors is starting putting traffic ranks and using alexa a lot.
He uses an expensive seo company and is no.1 for all his keywords.
Unless the company is trying to drag more money out of him by telling him he needs a good alexa ranking or he is doing it for vanity,,, there may be a bit of future for alexa because everything they have done different in the past has become important a few months to a year later.

Personally I find the top 100,000 or so results are quite accurate and the lower the figures get the more accurate the results, which I guess is pretty much what Alexa tell us. It can be usefull though when analysing competitors to gain another indication of how popular their site is, information which otherwise, short of accessing their web logs, you couldn't obtain.

I think there should be a better ranking service then Alexa and people shouldn't base everything on a search engine made from Amazon just forget about and focus more on your hits and ways to improve your site

I can get any site to under 60 000, by just clicking on it and some inner pages >40-50 times a day for a few weeks !!!! - so 2 people from different IP could get it even lower. Alexa is not even close to being accurate at any value.
