I am not sure. Alexa ranking is not very accurate. I have 2 different sites and one of them gets 5 times as much as the other one, but the alexa ranking is much lower. It is not very accurate from what I can see.

Please search the forums before making all these postings; the answers to your "questions" already exist. The answer to this particular question is that Alexa has a non-rational ranking system; it means very little.

My guess
would be that you installed their toolbar. My traffic rank went way up when I installed their tool bar as soon as I took it off it dropped dramatically. I don't even look at alexa anymore.

I also don't like tht fact they show all popular urls for a site. I had a private login screen(secure but still private)
admin.sitename.com and they posted it. Only way you could tell this is spying on a very, very limited number of users.
Now I have to deal with hackers more often than I would like to. Thanks Alexa.

Oh yea you also can blast fake traffic at your site and boost ranking. One of my customers purchased on of those 20,000 visitor packages and he called me to show his Alexa results.

Or you could buy one of those Alexabooster programs (saw them at Ebay for less than 10 bucks) and you could have your Alexa ranking as low as you want for the time you wish.

advertisers and alexa
The worst part is when a client (advertiser) thinks Alexa Rank is an honest metric. We've seen instances where Advertiser X chooses Site Y over Site Z even though Site Z has higher and more targeted traffic but Site Y has the higher arbitrary Alexa rank.
A true web traffic rank would be a great tool, but doesn't yet exist...at least beyond the top 100 or so that Nielsen might guage.

Perhaps this would be a good service / idea someone could code up, like "webstats" javascript but reporting to a central location. The benefit would be *All* page views would be recorded, not just *page views with client Alexa toolbar installed* page views. I'm sure someone's tried it already.. Actually the Google toolbar data might be enough? Google could go into web metrics reporting.. charge advertisers $1000 / month for the data :-/
