alexa ranking is a joke ...
se have sites that alexa ranks in the top 25,000 sites ... others that they rank in the 200,000 range (which we KNOW actually get more traffic than the one alexa ranks in the 25,000) .... also, we studied having one yes ONE person visit a site tht was ranked about 100,000 for a month ... one visit a day uisng their toolbar ... and it bumped the site up to 70,000 ....
so that is HOW THIN their data is ... and som subject to manipulation .... it is a waste of time looking at .... much less writing about .... |

Any data that is collected through a toolbar will always be skewed because it's a small datapooint your working with. If everyone had the toolbar than that would be a different story.

Not only that, since it's specific to one browser, on one platform, if your site is geared towards any demographic, it will be skewed. For example if your site his a high percentage of Macintosh or Linux users.

In Spain, an important newspaper decided to be on the #1000 and just installed the toolbar some hundred PC in his office. Today it's 246.

Not unless you have access to the sites logs. Alexa is a ball park figure and some is manipulated. |

> ball park figure and some is manipulated
It's essentially worthless as a gauge, except possibly comparing 2 sites with very, very similar demographics. Even then you'd have to be reasonably certain there wasn't any manipulation going on. It is very easily skewed, as mentioned above. Any site with a webmaster somewhat knowledgeable about toolbars, SEO, etc. that is touting their great Alexa ranking probably needed something to fill the spot on the page formerly occupied by those fake "top web awards" handed out in the late 90's. |

I take it this thread is therefore ironic Quote:
Hehehe, top web awards. They are getting a bashing lately, how come? I mean, at least everyone was a winner ;) I agree 100%, the alexa toolbar data is a waste, except when it provides some sort of marketing boost. For example, a client wanted to rank on this list of "hot sites" in their industry. They installed the toolbar on some 20 machines and, BOOM, number one in a month and a half. As far as being objective, useful or otherwise, YAWN, pass.

You will be saying the same thing about "Larry Page Rank" soon, if you want to learn more of why I think this way, look up my other posts on this forum. You will see my view of "Larry Page Rank" very clearly.... |
