How does alexa ranking work? Is alexa only counting the visits from users that have alexa toolbar?

Go to www.alexa.com and read the information there. You will get answers to all your questions.

I believe Alexa counts unique visitors and how long a visitor stays on the site.

I have a huge site that they still have a snap shot from a year ago....

That's rediculous....

Tip of the Day:

Go to your site in Alexa and click on "Correct Errors and Omissions"
Then, Click "Update Thumbnail Image"

It will be updated within 3 days

Otherwise it never updates....I use it every time I change my home page.

FYI, I could not find a "Correct Errors and Omissions" So I used the "Contact Information Editor" and then Update Thumbnail Image is at the top.

I think the location differs depending on your rank. The directions I gave are if you are over 100,000 as most that don't have a thumbnail at all are in (This technique fixes the "Picture coming soon"

You are right that the location can change.(It works even if you are below 100,000 and already have a picture like clasione)

Just to add to the Alexa thumb thing. Alexa takes a snapshot of your top-level domain's home page, even if you choose to update something like domain.com/subsite/

Same with the description: they tell you to put an info.txt in your domain.com/subsite/ directory, when in fact they MEAN to say it should go in the domain.com/ "root" dir. It makes sense in a way (although it didn't fit me), but the directions point the wrong way at least.
