Is this a good deal ?

Look what I found.

'Earn 3% or 4% commission
You will be paid a 3% commission on sales that are generated from the links on your site. A commission of 4% applies to sales above $750,001 in a year.'

Wow thats some generous offer...

How come they are not more generous with the commission ?

How much is profit for an online company of the price ? I know it depends on the type of item but could someone give a few examples ?

Thanks

As a guide I would generally say that 'real' products will pay between 2-15% on the sale price. They do not have the margin to work with that virtual retailers do.

Online products like software will pay more like 50% of the sale price

And online services (with repeat purchase opportunities) like online dating will look to pay 100% of the first payment.

I would not say their offer is unreasonable, but the >$750,001 part is a good laugh. maybe $750 would be more realistic.
If you can to $750,000 I'd get onto the phone to Zippo with your order.

Lets say a book has a sale price of $10 in an online bookstore, how much would be profit when they sell it ?

Also they only have the cookies for like a month, so its not even a crappy 4% for life of that customer, for me this is unreasonable.

If I could get to $750,000 as an affiliate I would open my own store and sell the procucts myself.

Your complaint is a common one zippo.
I did not cover it before because I know zippos have a life time warrantee do repeat purchases should be rare

As I see it you have two solutions.
1) you ask for 100% for the profit from the first sale. This is the approach we take at DarkBlue asking our advertisers to pay everything to the affiliate. After all, their customer service is out of your hands so if the advertiser wants a repeat sale they should work for it.
I think a reasonable advertiser would see this logic.

2) You chase a revenue sharing program where you earn a % of the life time earnings. If you have good quality traffic and the advertiser retains their customers well this is the solution for you but it does put even more faith in the advertiser.

As far as books go I think the going rate for a distributor is 15% but that does not cover any cost so the advertiser may only clear 7%

I would recommend reviewing some pay per lead programs. Generally they will pay anywhere from $1.00-$25.00 per lead and you're paid regardless of whether or not the person pursues the product.
