That can be argued the other way. Every day new areas of investment open up which naturally means new segments without any competition.

You only need to look at and venture into:
1. new stocks showing at each of the stock markets
2. research community publications and journals
3. daily news portals (and top dollar press release publishers)

...and you can find a new "target" (or many more) every week.

There is and will always be lots to be made

Ive done very well with PPC and affiliate marketing, and started less than a year ago ...

Think about it, new businesses and affiliates programs are coming online everyday. I see posts all the time "how to start an affiliate program" these are new business looking for recruits.

I tend to believe there are endless opportunities, and if you are very creative you can launch your own website or product

(There is a learning curve to all of this, Ive read tons, but only started to profit when I took action)

I know this maybe vague but its just what came to me off the top of my head

good luck

We did some research for a company press release and found estimates (Which believe are pretty decent) that combined sales, services and related promotion (not just eCommerce) that resulted from the internet were in excess of 5 trillion a year.

Just look at Google; their value, their advertising revenue; the revenue advertisers make off of that spend.
Look at ebay; their value, their revenue, the money that sellers make off of selling goods.

Think about that. Our industry is still growing. I don't really believe economist know how to accurately identify just how much, much less where all of the money made in a global market place, which is exactly what the Internet is. A single market place that expands the globe.

Can you make money online? Ha! That is a given. Saturated? It's called competition. 5 years ago, you still had to know how to compete to make money ;)

You got one thing right, imho, "If it was easy to make money online, everyone would do it".

You want to make money online? Learn how to do it or hire a good firm that can help you make money. (I believe fathom has a very well known seo firm)

Either way, be prepared to invest a ton of time, and have some money to invest.(Alot of money is not necessary, but sure can be helpful...lol)

A web business is no different than a traditional brick and mortar operation and has to be run, in many respects, the same way.

Owning and operating a ecommerce store is a full time 20 hour a day job! We are constantly working to improve our sites to keep up with the competition.

Just because there is a lot of competition doesn't mean that you can't break into an area.

It quite often isn't the first person/company that comes up with an idea or invention that makes money off it.. it is usually someone who comes along and takes the original thinking and implements it better..

Who was the first search engine? It wasn't Google ;)

I've just added a video to YouTube about making money online through Adsense as part of their 'Ask the Builder' video contest.

Before you ask, it's supposed to be that cheesy!

Cool

easy money is nowhere in this world of competition
its ur creativity that pays

some examples show that u can even survive and blossom in high competition:

orkut v/s facebook
facebook is giving a tough competion to orkut inspite of veing a newcomer

not even in the web world
IE v/s mozilla firefox
no doubt firefox has created a large presence and microsoft is facing problems to get users use IE just because of mozilla's user friendliness and gr8 service

there are a number of sites which gained improtance in recent times . Een the big G had a competitor yahoo since 1994, 4 years older but it made a difference in the minds of the users.

so the moral of the story : You can win!!

I'll probably do a few more of those as Google's contest limited the videos to 2 minutes. Planning on some very OTT videos, and maybe some lighting... yes, lighting would be good.

I wouldnt say they " got lucky" these people work hard and their hard work paid off. Yes the internet is oversaturated with millions of the exact same businesses. BUT you would run into the same problem starting any business, you need to find out how you will compete by market research and applying the factors of competition, 1 - Price ,2 - Location 3 - Quality of product 4 - Quality of Customer Service , theres like 4 more i cant remember but starting an internet business is the same as any business. If you open a donut store obviously there is another one 3 blocks away, but why and how are you going to stand out is what makes a business successfull and what makes a true entrepreneur. Basically if you put the time, effort and enough thought into it and plan everything to a tee you should be fine, dont think your going to be rich overnight is a good place to start. But as stated before businesses in general are oversaturated, find your niche, capitalize on a factor of competition and dominate your competitors. Case closed... if you want it bad enough it will come through hard work and research.

It isn't necessarily what you do but how you do it.

Amazon.com may be the biggest online resource for finding books (and of course now just about anything else) however I have seen clients of my who sell books online become relatively successful.

It's all about your target market.

In this case, the client in question sold books to schools, and although they sold to anyone, their clientèle, as well as the books they sold, were primarily for high school and elementary school teachers to have their students read.

Again, they are not the size of amazon but as we all know, size doesn't matter
